Some individuals leave a mark on society. They live their lives determined to make this world a better place. My friend Sue was one of these people. I met Sue when we were just starting high school. Her parents had just divorced and she had very little direction growing up. She worked hard all throughout high school saving all her earnings to fulfill her dream of going to college. Sue worked hard and taught me many life lessons in the span of our 45+ year friendship. Sue did in fact achieve her dream of earning her degree, became a well-respected business woman in the community and loved life to the fullest. Sue’s smile lit up a room, and she was not only a friend but a mentor to me when changing career paths. She was my biggest cheerleader when I started on my own educational dream of earning a Bachelor’s degree at the age of 53. Sue would tell me, just keep going, don’t ever stop until you reach your goal. You are worth it!
At the age of 55 Sue was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. As with all things in her life Sue fought hard to maintain her relationships and memory, and continued to be a driving force in my life. Sue taught me to work through the struggles, and never to give up. Sue lost her battle with Alzheimer’s at the age of 61.
My memories of our lifelong friendship are vivid. It is hard to believe that she is no longer here, but Sue has inspired me and all she knew to work hard and stay the course. Sue was a blessing and inspiration to all she knew.
